Acrobat and the Portable Document Format came about because we, businesses and individuals, needed a way to see the content of files created by anyone, on any computer, using any program.

You can create a PDF document from any program from which you can print.

The Acrobat Family of programs include:

Adobe Reader (free from Adobe) incorporates the features of Acrobat Reader and the discontinued Acrobat eBook Reader. It's purpose is to view and print PDFs and fill out and submit forms.

Acrobat 6 Standard is for viewing and doing some markup and comments on documents in a workgroup situation, and digitally signing documents.

Acrobat 6 Professional is considered to be the upgrade from Acrobat 5. It's used to create forms, add links and multimedia interactivity as well as to do the tasks of the standard version.

Acrobat Distiller 6 gets installed when you install either the Standard or Professional versions. It's the choice of print professionals for creating PDFs. Designers and prepress staff have more control over producing a PDF when they use Distiller.

Acrobat Elements is a simple program used only for creating PDFs and is ideal for large businesses who wish to standardize their documents in PDF format. A minimum of 1,000 licenses must be purchased.
