CSS Essentials

Using Cascading Style Sheets makes your web code more maintainable, because the way the page looks, the formatting, is kept separate from the actual content on the page. CSS helps sites load faster; search engines enjoy CSS optimized pages; CSS makes pages smaller (in K); and Most Importantly, YOU are in control of how your pages lay out (well, you have Better control!).

While there are exceptions to every rule*, CSS is the way to go; it's been the 'modern' way to lay out pages for some time, and now is the time to join the site developers of the present and future.

Topics include, but are not limited to

  • Understanding CSS: Rules, selectors, internal and external...
  • Foreground and Background Properties
  • ID's, Classes
  • The Cascade; Presedence
  • How CSS affects Page Layout
  • The CSS Box Model
  • Setting Typography
  • Margins, borders, whitespace...
  • Styling Tables and doing styles for various mediums (Screen, Print, Mobile... )
  • NavBars, sidebars, footers, masthead
  • Margins, borders: whitespace and separation
  • Putting it all together: creating a totally CSS formatted page
  • Update the look of a site with a few simple keystrokes!

A few of the CSS properties covered include clear, float, container, line-height, letter-spacing, fixing column drop, padding, text transform....

All you need to do CSS is very basic text editor like TextEdit or NotePad, a page to work on, and a browser with which to view your work. It's a very satisfying process, and you can get control of how web pages are presented to your viewers. That's been the biggest concern of graphic designers who now have the opportunity to do web pages. Using HTML/xhtml/Dreamweaver/GoLive just doesn't do it. With CSS you have control.

MacTraining Enterprises' 3 day CSS Essentials class will introduce the beginning and intermediate site developer to the authoring techniques necessary to produce well designed, easily navigable, and convenient to update, web pages. Reg. $845 person; 20% discount for 3+ in the same class.

The fee includes materials retained by the participants. Refreshments are provided. Lunch is on your own; there are various and numerous restaurants within a few minutes of the training center.

* high traffic sites like eBay and Yahoo can be slower if external style sheets are used. While it would be great if your and my sites would have that kind of traffic, it's unlikely, and so this exception hardly applies to us!
