QuarkXPress is the
layout and design choice of many publishers. It is available
in 11 languages. It is an integrated publishing package which allows you combine pictures,
text, typography, writing, editing, and printing, all in one application.
MacTraining Enterprises
offers a Basics and and Intermediate/Advanced level class. The one day Basics workshop provides
all the essential techniques necessary to create brochures, simple newsletters, signs, and more.
The Intermediate and Advanced class
covers master pages for documents that have some of the same elements on all pages, like
page numbering, document titles, etc., more work with styles, creating and managing long documents, and a host of other techniques required by today's designers. This class is a must for
catalogers and manual producers.
All classes are
hands-on with a maximum of 6 persons per class. They are currently training on version 6.5, since there are stability issues with version 7.

Quick
Tour: We start with an overview of the key features of QuarkXPress including application vs. document preferences.
We'll go over the tools, create page guides, learn efficient ways to
navigate through a document, work with items by creating and then modifying
their properties, their contents, and learn how to use the measurement
palette correctly.
Working
with Text: We'll import text into text boxes, learn how to quickly format
text, create paragraph styles by example, review copy and paste, and apply paragraph and character
attributes and styles, too, to text.
Essential Picture
Considerations: We'll import graphics into picture boxes, do runaround,
do some visual effects and styling of pictures, and learn to copy and
paste a picture box, and a text box, too, with all it's/their attributes.
Printing: This chapter
goes over many of the features of the new Print Dialog, You'll select
a printer, update your pictures if necessary, and specify printing options
for your job. You may not need all your graphics to print out at high
res just for a proof!
Prerequisite: You need a working knowledge of your computer and it's operating system, OS X or Windows, including use of the mouse, standard menus, and commands; as well as how to open, save, and close files.
Single registrant fee: $395. There is a sliding percent discount, up to 20%, for 2-6 attendees from your company attending the same session. The fee for a private, one-on-one class is $495. Intermediate and Advanced QuarkXPress – a 2 day class
Constructing a New Document and Using Color: This section includes setting preferences, formatting Master Pages to include page numbering and graphic and textual elements, automatically flowing in a long block of text, adding and rearranging pages, and modifying master elements after the document is in progress. During the color segment, your will create and apply process colors, Pantone colors, see how the Hexachrome system works, and experiment with creating new colors from 2 or more spot colors.
Working
with Text and Fine Tuning Type: This comprehensive section teaches you
to link text boxes correctly, format text and create and apply character and paragraph style
sheets, set tabs, run a spell check, and doing a search and replace.
This lesson continues with practice on leading, tracking, kerning, hyphenation and justification, and preventing widows and orphans.
Page Elements: You'll
learn shortcuts in modifying the stacking order of elements, changing
the box content, how to group item and modify items in the group, how
to create and use Libraries (and excellent feature), layers, and how to evenly
replicate items on your layout.
Preparing for High
Res Printing: This section covers printing preliminary color separations,
composites, Collect for Output and topics about sending your files to
a service bureau. You will also get tips on how to replicate your fonts
for the service bureau, and be shown an amazing file that demonstrates
the difference between TruType and Type 1 fonts.
We'll go over drawing with the Bezier line tools, although serious designers will use Adobe Illustrator to create logos, etc. While
those familiar with Adobe Illustrator will have and easier time with
these tools, they do function slightly differently in QuarkXPress. This
section also covers creating shapes with the Merge command, reshaping
boxes, and changing the properties of anchor points and segments.
Advanced
Graphics: crop
pictures using embedded paths and channels, and create and modify a
clipping path, these techniques belong in a program purposely written
to do them. This section does include some useful techniques
for managing imported pictures.
Productivity
Topics: There is more work with libraries, using templates, and getting
the most out of Character and Paragraph style sheets.
Books,
Lists, and Indexes: This is the section of the Advanced class that publishers
of catalogs, manuscripts, instruction manuals, even school papers, really
need.
You
will create a book, a compilation of multiple documents. You'll rearrange
chapters, create independently numbered sections, and change the Master
Chapter of the book, synchronizing the Styles of the Book.
In
the Lists section of this workshop, you'll create style sheets for the TOC (Table of
Contents), add the style sheet to the book chapters, define some lists
for the TOC, build a list for a chapter and a book, and learn how to
jump to different chapters and sections in the Book.
You'll
learn to create a simple index, prepare more style sheets and a Master
Page, define the punctuation for the index, tag entries, edit the entries,
create a cross reference and build a formatted index.
This
is a valuable day for anyone using QuarkXPress for anything more than
brochures and advertising pieces.
